this is from overnight. there is a little bit of snow you can see right next to the snowman still up from christmas. >> i'm not sure that is an actual snow snowman. >> you don't think so? >> a lot of snow. >> it was a christmas decoration. >> yes, covering some some spots, a little upwards of 2 inches as you get up towards northern maryland and southern pennsylvania. that was about it. the flake were beautiful and when it transitioned from rain to snow even here in northwest washington, big beautiful snowflakes falling. enough to scrape on your car this morning in spots. it will take you a few extra minutes here to get out the door and get to work roadwise so be ready for it. 35 at reagan national. dulles, 34. bwi marshall, 32 degrees. looking at our radar, you can see wear nice and quiet here locally. we've cleared out. that has allowed temperatures

to bottom out in the upper 20s and low 30s. temperatures are cooling off enough for anything that was liquid to refreeze on the roads. there is the bigger picture. we are quiet up towards boston. that is our storminess pushing off the southeast coast of the massachusetts and we are in no a lot of sunshine and a beautiful day with high temperatures about 50 degrees or so here in washington. so a nice one. 49 in quantico. 50 in fredericksburg. >> it is so chilly when we start out but it is nice when you see the temperatures. you realize you can get outside. >> the sun is getting higher in the sky. >> yeah. thank you, tucker. >> time to check in with julie wright. she has a look at on-time traffic. >> all right. here is what i know. downtown, there was a place police chase that ended on the inbound 11th street bridge. that is where we still have the police activity and an accident that remains under investigation. on the ram top eastbound 50, we had the other crash and that was tying up the ramp to

riverdale. wake up to just wet pavement. grassy areas covered with its white stuff. our roads look clear. traffic flowing freely although starting to slow a bit coming across the occoquan leaving woodbridge up to the springfield interchange. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. we are staying on top of breaking news today from south africa. olympic sprinter oscar pistorius. he allegedly shot to death the woman that was his girlfriend. she may have been trying to vice him for valentine's day. developing in our area this morning, an elderly machine found dead inside his northern virginia home. >> police are calling it a

suspicious death and are now searching for clues and a suspect. >> melanie alnwick is live with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the house here on holly street is still taped off. there is also a police car stationed out front as investigators try to figure out exactly what happened here. here is what we do know. it was shortly before #:00 last night when an adult resident came home and found the 94-year- old man dead alone in the house. police say he had upper body trauma but they didn't elaborate on exactly what that means. >> some of the paramedics aride on the scene and pronounced him dead at the scene. we are still investigating but we do feel it appears to be somewhat suspicious. >> reporter: sources tell fox 5 that investigators believe there was a burglary or robbery here and that the person who

found the man dead was either an adult son or step-son. police do not have any information at this point bay possible suspect. at this point, they are just calling day death investigation. they have not put that label of murder or homicide yet on this case. now, according to an article in the del ray patch, the people would lived in this house had complained for the city council last year about two burglaries. but police so far have not confirmed those reports. >> a left questions still this morning. thank you so much. we'll check in with you later. looking at some of our other top stories this horn, an alexandria sheriff's deputy is on routine administrative leave after prince george's county police say the deputy shot and killed an intruder. the deputy returned home on rose marie drive in fort washington tuesday night and found an intruder inside. he shot the suspect using a personal handgun. the intruder collapsed on the front law and died. police have not released the deputy's name or the intruder's name. there is another sealed

hearing set for today in the chandra levy murder trial. it has to do with new evidence in the case. the capitol hill intern was found murdered back in 2001 and an illegal immigrant was found guilty and sentenced to 60 years in prison. at today's hearings, some court observers and member of the media will be allowed into the courtroom but will not be able to hear what the lawyers and judges are saying. still ahead on fox 5 morning news, one. our area's largest school systems meets with parents and community members about school security. >> we'll tell you what changes are already in place and what changes you could see soon. >> first, police confirm the manhunt for a former lapd officer accused in a killing spree is over though one major question in the case has yet to be answered. we'll be back.  my mom doesn't drink starbucks coffee because she thinks it's too dark,

welcome back. parts of mississippi continue to recover from a massive tornado that hit on sunday. president obama has doe cleared a federal disafter ther in the state clearing wait for some federal aide to be used in recovery efforts there. the tornado hit the campus of the university of mississippi at hattiesburg causing millions of dollars in damage. >> live look outside right now at the washington monument. chilly start and some areas got some snow. >> not a whole lot of snow but up to about anden. enough to have to do a little scraping out there on the windshields. you might see a slick spot or two on the roadways as temperatures are falling back into the upper 20s and low 30s. just be ready for that. otherwise, it should be a beautiful day for today. we are not expecting any more

getting i agent snow there out towards cape cod. otherwise, things are quieting down along the eastern seaboard. our next focus, this little piece of energy out towards chicago will dip down into the washington area late tomorrow night and that will bring us for the most part colder air for the weekend. it could also give us a period of rain and/or snow showers around here second half of friday night into early saturday morning. here is your forecast for today. plenty of sunshine. wind won't be terribly strong out of the north and west at five to 10. nice valentine's day. 38 tonight, a few clouds and cool overnight. parts of the area will be close to freezing tomorrow morning and here is your accu-weather seven-day forecast. mentioned the chance for showers and/or snow showers late tomorrow night. generally sunny this weekend although cold. president's day for those of you who get to enjoy a day off, 47 with sunshine all of the nice-hooking stretch here for the long weekend. that is a look at weather. let's do some traffic and find out what is happening with julie. >> all right. on the roads this morning, we woke up. we found that white fluffy

stuffat gss but not so much on the interstates, which is good for us. however, northbound along i-95 as you continue out towards 895, before a crash. the right side of the road is what is squeezing by. delays are starting to form back at route 100 headed northbound along route i-95 this morning. no issues reported on 295 if you are heading up towards b wait a minute for a flight. no issues reported as you travel north of 212 and powder mill road. on the top stretch of the beltway, inner loop is nice and clear from 207 headed eastbound towards silver spring. on the outer loop, authorities tell me they are on the scene of the crash that is tying up two right lanes on the outer loop of the beltway. heads up leaving silver spring continuing westbound around 495. southbound 270, you are still in the clear. no issues reported right now from germantown headed out towards the split. eastbound on 66, no issues reported right now leaving

manassas coming in from the rest area headed out towards centerville. light traffic volume here. northbound on 95 and 395, you will find the lanes are open leaving stafford headed to woodbridge. hovs running smoothly for those continuing out towards newington. 395 good to go for those leaving the capital play continuing out to the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. many parents have had questions about school security since last year's elementary school shooting in connecticut. >> like many senior high school systems in your area, fairfax county schools are working hard to make sure students are safe. audrey barnes has more. >> reporter: the sandy hook shooter kicked his way into the school and began his shooting rampage. one of the first questions asked at this community forum was what measures were being considered to secure the classrooms. putting a chain lock on the door arab bar

on the door so a teacher can make that door secure. >> and in a panic, that starts happening that. extra implement you put in that door, they're in the going to get it off. i have aseep scratch marks dug in doors where people in a panic can't find the door knob of an open door. that is our methodology behind why we don't do that. >> reporter: jim mclean says fairfax county schools have started testing electronic access doors at county high schools. some middle and elementary schools already have them. as far as chaining and barricaded classroom doors, he says locks are best. >> the case study has been folks not going through locked doors. >> reporter: mclean says every classroom has an emergency safety guide for teachers and substitutes to follow in an emergency. there are even vests inside, orange for teachers, yellow for administrators so first responders can identify them.

>> sweet at 5:00 p.m. >> oh, that is so nice. i almost missed that. >> you are a special kind of guy today. feeling romantic. what can i tell you, wisdom. >> please save me from this, julie wright. >> don't send it over here. i think it is funny though. he he is talking about people getting all sweet at 5:00. he means us because we go to bed at 6:00. there was a police chase that resulted in an accident off of northbound 295 to the inbound 11th street bridge. the accident activity now cleared so the ramp has been reopened. we have that accident activity that was under investigation for quite some time but the ramp has been reopened traveling off of the northbound 295 coming across the anacostia headed for the freeway. if you are traveling northbound, you will find lanes are open continuing out towards the d.c. line. but earlier this morning, as a result of a police chase, we had a portion of the inbound 11th street bridge blocked. let's pop up our cameras. we'll show you what else is

happening out here on the roads. northbound i-9 5, the crash occurred before 895. traffic volume improving and beginning to ease as you travel northbound up towards 695-6789 southbound, your lanes are open. let's continue now with our next set of cameras. southbound 270, crash occurred just south of 124 tying up the right side of the roadway. identify while, they had the southbound lanes closed. now, it is just the right lanes that is blocked. delays creeping up on you leaving germantown. expect to find delays building from 185 con condition avenue head west. allot of that snow fell on to the grassy areas but it is causing some slick spots because of the wet pavement. allow extra time out there on the roads. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. >> thank you. we have some new information to share in the breaking news today from south africa. that is where olympic sprinter oscar pistorius has been arrested in the shooting death

of his girlfriend inside his home. police say the victim is model riva steincamp. pistorius may have mistakenly thought she was a burglar when she may have been trying to surprise him for valentine's day. pistorius made history last summer becoming the first double amputee to compete in a regular olympic game. a developing story in alexandria this morning after a man is found dead inside his home. >> the victim is a 94-year-old man home alone at the time. fox 5's melanie alnwick is live in alexandria with the latest on the investigation. such a sad story this morning. >> reporter: that's right. this is a very quiet community and people here have certainly been shocked by this. you can see the home is still taped off here. there is also a police car that has been stationed out front just down the street. they're continuing to try to figure out exactly what happened here but we can tell you that police are calling the circumstance suspicious. it was shortly before 7:00 last

night when an adult male who lives in the home came back and found the 94-year-old man dead alone in the house. now, police say he had upper body trauma but they didn't elaborate on exactly what that means. sources tell fox 5 that investigators believe there was a burglary or a robbery here and that the person who found the man dead was an adult son or step-son. >> we're still investigating the facts surrounding the death but we do feel that it appears to be somewhat suspicious. >> just out here walking my dog. i had no idea. i didn't know. that is a little scary. >> reporter: according to an article in the del ray patch, the people who live in this house complained tries to the city council about their house being burglarized in the last year. police have not confirmed those reports. at this point, they don't have any information about a possible suspect. they're still calling this at this point a death investigation.

president obama is running into opposition to his plan to increase the federal minimum wage. in tuesday's state of the union address, the president proposeed a like from the current rate of 7:25 an hour to $9 an hour by 2015. republican house speaker john boehner says ultimately that will lead to fewer jobs. >> when you raise the price of employment, guess what happens. you get less of it. at a time when the american people are still asking the question, where are the jobs, why would we want to make it harder for small employers to hire people? >> on wednesday, d.c. mayor vincent gray said he may ask the council to raise the minimum wage in the district. president obama will be in georgia later on today pushing a proposal he laid out in tuesday's state of the union

address. he wants states to make preschool more accessible. preschool can be expensive and wait lists for programs like head start can be daunting. numbers show less than 30% of children nationwide either have access to or are enrolled in a pre-k or a head start program. the state of georgia is considered a success story when it comes to early childhood education. it is the first to offer voluntary pre-k for every four- year-old regardless of income. bank of america are is helping home owners in the d.c. region who are having trouble with foreclosure t starts at 8:00 this morning and tomorrow. so far, 136 people are signed up but walk-s in are wake. customers with bank of america can all 855-201-7426 to register.

traffic slows between 50 and 123. we'll show you what is happening along northbound i-97 as you approach 32. robert said i'm stuck in this, been here for at least 15 minutes. northbound i-97 closed at 32 because of the crash. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. when you think of former president lyndon johnson, you may think of the pace program or the vietnam war. but lbj was also a remantic. he wrote hundreds of letters to lady bird before they were married. those letters are on display at the university of texas in austin for valentine's day. johnson asked his future first lady to marry him after their first date but it took a few months of convincing before she said yes. when they finally married, johnson didn't splurge on their wedding bands. they came from sears for only $2.50 apiece. i had no idea. >> very frugal. >> i wonder if those letters
